Rejecting a Strategic Political Merger

A coalition of political pressure groups has expressed public satisfaction following the All Progressives Congress’s decision to decline a planned defection by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. Led by Professor Musa Kirfi, the Dream Bauchi Project and the Lawyers for the Cause of Bauchi stated that the collapse of the merger with the state’s People’s Democratic Party structure was a victory for the people. The groups thanked President Bola Tinubu and APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda for prioritizing the concerns of local party members who had voiced strong opposition to the Governor’s entry.

Endorsing Senator Shehu Buba Umar for 2027

In addition to applauding the party’s decision, the coalition utilized the forum to announce their formal support for Senator Shehu Buba Umar. Representing the Bauchi South Senatorial District, Umar recently declared his intention to contest the governorship seat in the 2027 general elections. The groups characterized their support as part of a long-term struggle for improved governance and a "fortunes-changing" leadership framework in the state. They argued that Umar represents a fresh alternative to the existing political arrangements currently dominating the region.

Critiquing the Current Governance Framework

The groups offered a stern critique of the Bauchi PDP, describing it as a "narrow arrangement" that has failed to address the state's most pressing issues. According to the coalition, Bauchi is currently grappling with serious developmental challenges that require immediate solutions rather than political maneuvering regarding party defections. They asserted that simply changing a political platform would not provide the PDP structure with new leverage, as the electorate is politically mature and unlikely to be swayed by cosmetic changes to party affiliation.
