Breakdown of Bipartisan Defection Talks
The anticipated movement of Governor Bala Mohammed from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly stalled. Alhaji Samaila Burga, the PDP Chairman for Bauchi State, confirmed the development during a press briefing in Bauchi on Saturday. Burga attributed the collapse of the negotiations to significant disagreements over the proposed sharing formula for political influence and specific conditions demanded by the APC leadership. The failure to reach a consensus has effectively halted what was expected to be a major shift in the state's political landscape.
Strategic Reticence Amid Political Risks
The PDP leadership in Bauchi has expressed a firm stance against any transition that would leave the party in a vulnerable position. Burga highlighted that the party was unwilling to pursue a hasty move, citing the experiences of several other governors who defected to the APC only to find themselves stripped of political control. The Chairman specifically referenced former or sitting executives from states such as Kano, Adamawa, Rivers, Kogi, and Plateau as cautionary examples. According to Burga, many who made similar transitions now regret their decisions due to the loss of their established political structures.
Rejection of Proposed Structural Conditions
A primary point of contention in the failed talks was the PDP’s requirement to move into the APC with its existing political structures intact. Burga asserted that the PDP intended to maintain a strong bargaining position based on the current administration's record of delivering democratic dividends in Bauchi State. However, he characterized the final conditions offered by the APC as "cancerous," leading to an immediate withdrawal from the negotiation process. This rejection underscores a deep-seated mistrust regarding the APC's willingness to accommodate the governor’s existing power base.
