Presidential Pivot: Responding to the Plateau Crisis

In a swift response to a deteriorating security situation, President Bola Tinubu has shelved his planned visit to Iperu, Ogun State, originally set for Thursday, April 2, 2026. According to a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President will instead travel to Jos, the capital of Plateau State. This change of plans comes in the wake of a horrific shooting at an open-air bar on Sunday, March 29, which resulted in 26 fatalities. The President's visit is intended to offer direct consolation to the victims' families and the state government while signaling a federal commitment to restoring order in one of Nigeria’s most volatile regions.

Security Pressures and Legislative Backlash

The recent violence in Angwan Rukuba has sparked intense political debate. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) has notably challenged Minister of Defence Christopher Musa to deliver immediate results or resign, highlighting a perceived gap between administrative assurances and the reality on the ground. Security experts note that Nigeria’s forces are currently stretched thin, managing an Islamist insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and ongoing communal clashes in the North-Central zone. The President’s presence in Jos is viewed as a necessary symbolic gesture to reassure a jittery public.

Rescheduled Ogun Visit and Lagos Infrastructure Blitz

While the Plateau visit takes precedence, the commissioning of the Gateway International Cargo Airport in Ogun State has been moved to Saturday, April 4. During this visit, the President will also inaugurate two commercial aircraft for import and export operations and open a new Federal Operations Unit for the Nigerian Customs Service. Between these events, the President will observe Good Friday in Lagos. His Lagos itinerary includes the commissioning of several legacy projects under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, such as the iconic Ojota/Opebi Link Bridge and the Lagos State Geographic Information System Building.
