The Transparency Gap

Caroline Harvie-Teare, chief executive of Venues Ōtautahi, told RNZ’s Checkpoint that while the intent to bring world-class entertainment to New Zealand is "fantastic," the mechanics of the fund are alarmingly opaque.

Closed-Door Policy: Unlike the previous "events boost fund," which featured an open application process, the new attraction package is restricted to invited entities.

Objective Risk: Harvie-Teare warned that this exclusivity "causes some risk about how objective and fair it is," noting that the industry remains in the dark about which bids are being declined and why.

The "Shot in the Arm" Warning

Beyond the immediate lack of transparency, Harvie-Teare expressed concern that the Government is creating an economic "sugar hit" that local councils and venues won't be able to match once the $40 million runs dry.
