Economic Impact and Attendance Milestones

The first Super Round hosted at Christchurch’s brand new Te Kaha One New Zealand Stadium has exceeded all financial and attendance projections. Christchurch NZ chief executive Ali Adams confirmed that more than 70,000 fans attended the five match festival, with 13,000 visitors traveling from out of town. Initial estimates suggest the weekend generated well over $6 million in visitor spending, a figure Adams believes is conservative due to the favorable weather and high engagement in the city’s central business district.

The Case for a Permanent Christchurch Fixture

Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge is spearheading the push for a repeat performance, arguing that Christchurch’s infrastructure is uniquely suited for major multi day events. Local officials highlighted the stadium's central city location, the proximity of the airport, and the high capacity of local hotels as competitive advantages that are difficult for other regions to replicate. The goal is to establish a "super week" of sport in the city, building on the momentum of other major events like the recent Supercars racing debut in the region.

Regional Competition for Hosting Rights

While Christchurch has the inside track due to its recent success, other franchises are eager to bring the lucrative "Super Round" to their home turf. Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph has already publicly pitched Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium as a viable alternative, emphasizing its indoor roof and strong student culture. Super Rugby Pacific chief executive Jack Mesley acknowledged the interest from other parties but confirmed that negotiations would naturally begin with the Crusaders and the city of Christchurch given their recent backing of the extravaganza.
