Anzac Day Targeted by Overnight Vandalism The solemnity of Anzac Day in Melbourne was disrupted by a series of targeted attacks on Returned and Services League (RSL) venues. Police allege that two women were caught in the act of spraying graffiti on the walls of the Heidelberg RSL at approximately 1:45 AM on Saturday. The pair reportedly attempted to flee the scene on foot but were apprehended by a constable and a senior constable following a short chase. The incident occurred as the community prepared for dawn services to honor fallen service members.
Offensive Slogans Spark Community Fury The vandalism was not limited to Heidelberg, with the Reservoir and Fawkner RSL sub-branches also reporting significant damage. At the Reservoir venue, red spray paint was used to deface the building with slogans including “Death to the ADF,” an act described by local officials as "hateful" and "beyond total belief." Despite the graffiti, RSL representatives confirmed that dawn services proceeded as planned, though many attendees were unfortunately exposed to the offensive imagery during the traditional "gunfire breakfast."
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigations The two women arrested in connection with the Heidelberg incident have been formally charged with criminal damage, marking graffiti on property without consent, and possession of a graffiti implement. Victoria Police investigators believe the Reservoir vandalism is directly linked to the Heidelberg arrests and are currently working to determine if the Fawkner incident follows the same pattern. Law enforcement has called for anyone with dashcam footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers as the investigation continues.
RSL Leadership Responds to ‘Disrespectful’ Acts Venue managers and RSL spokespeople have expressed deep disappointment over the timing of the attacks. Paul Farmer, manager of the Heidelberg RSL, described the act as a "kick in the guts," noting the significant effort put into organizing marches and services. A spokesperson for the RSL stated that the attacks have only strengthened the resolve of members to advocate for veterans and commemorate the dead, asserting that "the paint will be removed" and memorials restored to their proper state.
Public Unity in the Face of Hostility In the wake of the vandalism, RSL branches reported an overwhelming surge of public support and unity. While the g...
