A Strategic Move Toward Sustainable Feeding
In a significant effort to revolutionize the livestock sector, the Ondo State Livestock Productivity Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) launched a two-day intensive training program for 100 livestock farmers on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Held in Ilara-Mokin, Ifedore LGA, the initiative aims to equip farmers with the technical skills needed to produce high-quality fodder and improve overall livestock productivity. The program targets poultry, pig, sheep, and goat farmers, focusing on low-cost technologies that can be immediately adopted to stabilize feed supply throughout the year.
Innovative Techniques: From Hydroponics to Silage
The capacity-building program, themed "Capacity building on fodder production and value addition, including sustainable hydroponic fodder production," introduces participants to modern agricultural practices. State Project Coordinator Olufemi Adeogun highlighted that the training covers essential conservation techniques such as hay and silage production, as well as the treatment and utilization of crop residues. These methods are designed to address the persistent challenges of seasonal feed shortages and the skyrocketing costs of commercial feed, which have historically limited the profitability of agropastoral communities in the state.
The "Knowledge Multiplier" Strategy
The 100 participants were carefully selected from all three senatorial districts to serve as "lead farmers." According to Adeogun, these individuals are expected to act as knowledge multipliers within their respective communities, retraining other farmers and establishing practical demonstration plots. Each senatorial district will undergo its own two-day cycle of training to ensure localized impact. By decentralizing this expertise, L-PRES hopes to create a sustainable network of extension services that can mitigate climate shocks and improve rural incomes across Ondo State.
