Strategic Decoupling from the National Grid

Ondo State has taken a decisive step toward energy independence by licensing two independent power firms, Ore Power Limited and ASB Valiant Electricity Limited. The licences, issued under the Ondo State Electricity Law of 2020, represent a shift in the state's strategy to bypass national grid inconsistencies and stimulate local economic growth. Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Johnson Alabi, stated that this milestone is a direct result of federal reforms, specifically the Electricity Act, which empowers states to manage their own energy markets.

Ore Axis Targeted for Industrial Boost

A primary focus of this new licensing round is the Ore industrial corridor, a major economic hub in the southern district. OSERB State Coordinator Stephen Bolawole revealed that Ore Power Limited has been mandated to generate up to 100 megawatts of electricity. This capacity is specifically intended to stabilize supply for industries and surrounding communities that have long grappled with erratic power. The initiative aims to transform the axis into a fully functional, self-sustaining electricity market capable of attracting significant long-term investment.

Enhancing Evacuation and Distribution Infrastructure

To complement the generation efforts, ASB Valiant Electricity Limited has been tasked with critical infrastructure development. The firm will construct an 18-kilometer Omotoso–Ore 33KV double-circuit line. This project is essential for the efficient evacuation of power from generation points to end-users, ensuring that the increased capacity actually reaches residents and factories. The government emphasized that these licences are binding legal instruments that require the firms to meet strict performance expectations and regulatory standards.
