A Formal Call for Executive Intervention in Ebonyi State
The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has issued a public appeal to Governor Francis Nwifuru, urging him to utilize his authority as the chief security officer of Ebonyi State to investigate a targeted attack on a prominent journalist. Benjamin Nworie, who serves as a reporter for This Day and the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the state, was reportedly the victim of a violent home invasion. The group’s deputy President, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and spokesperson Chinyeze Ohia emphasized that an independent probe is necessary to uphold the rule of law and protect media practitioners within the region.
Disturbing Allegations of Violence in the Presence of Family
The details surrounding the incident have been described by the socio-political group as deeply disturbing and a blatant violation of human rights. According to the official statement, the brutal assault on Mr. Nworie took place at his private residence in Abakaliki, occurring directly in front of his wife and eight year old daughter. Ohanaeze Ndigbo characterized the act as an unacceptable display of bullying and intimidation, noting that such brazen hostility against a reputable individual poses a significant threat to the principles of a free and just society.
Linking Political Thuggery to Local Government Leadership
Central to the group’s grievance is the allegation that the perpetrators are thugs loyal to Mrs. Peace Agwu, the Chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area. Ohanaeze Ndigbo has specifically called on Governor Nwifuru to summon the local government boss to address these claims of involvement. The organization noted that the victim is himself a native of the Ishielu district, making the alleged state sponsored violence against a kinsman particularly egregious. The group insists that the political leadership must be held accountable for the actions of those operating under their influence.
