Regional Weather Dynamics: North-Central Outlook
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has projected a significant shift in weather patterns for the North-Central states beginning April 1, 2026. Residents can expect a transition from cloudy skies with sunshine intervals in the morning to thunderstorms and light rain over Kogi and Benue States by late afternoon. The intensity is expected to increase on April 2, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rain hitting the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa during the morning, followed by region-wide widespread thunderstorms. By April 3, the cycle of isolated morning storms and evening widespread activity is predicted to persist, signaling a high-moisture period for the central belt.
Meteorological Projections for Northern and Southern Territories
The Northern region will experience predominantly sunny skies with patches of clouds, though specific areas are marked for precipitation. Taraba and Kaduna are on alert for morning thunderstorms on April 2, while Adamawa, Borno, and Gombe are expected to see moderate rainfall by the evening of April 3. In the Southern region, the atmosphere will remain mostly cloudy. Early morning thunderstorms are anticipated over coastal states like Akwa Ibom and Cross River, evolving into widespread thunderstorms and moderate rain across the entire South by the afternoons of April 2 and 3. Lagos, Ogun, and Delta are specifically highlighted for strong morning storm chances on the final day of the forecast.
Aviation Safety and Operational Hazards
In light of the predicted atmospheric instability, NiMet has issued a stern advisory to the aviation industry. Airline operators are urged to strictly adhere to weather forecasts provided by the agency for their specific flight routes. Thunderstorms often bring unpredictable wind shears and reduced visibility, which can pose severe risks during takeoff and landing. By mandating the use of updated weather reports, the agency aims to prevent flight mishaps and ensure that pilot briefings include current data on storm cell locations and intensity.
