A Decisive Recovery for Equities Market Capitalization
The Nigerian equities market staged a significant turnaround during the trading week ending March 6, 2026, effectively erasing the bearish trends observed in late February. Market data indicates that investors gained a cumulative N2.67 trillion, pushing the total equity capitalization from N123.7 trillion to N126.4 trillion. This resurgence was characterized by positive movement in four out of the five trading sessions, signaling a return of investor confidence across several key sectors. The All-Share Index reflected this optimism, appreciating by 2.16% to close the week at 196,968 points, a notable jump from the previous week's closing figure of 192,826.78.
Daily Fluctuations and Investor Sentiment Shifts
The week opened with an aggressive bullish run on Monday, March 2, which saw an immediate injection of N1.72 trillion into market valuations. This momentum carried into Tuesday with an additional gain of N711 billion within the first five hours of trading. However, the market encountered a brief correction on Wednesday, March 4, resulting in a temporary loss of N107 billion as some investors moved to lock in profits. This volatility was short-lived, as the market resumed its upward trajectory on Thursday and Friday, adding a combined N340 billion to conclude the week on a recovery high.
Financial Services Lead Sectoral Activity Charts
In terms of trading volume, the Financial Services Industry remained the undisputed engine of the Nigerian Exchange, dominating the activity charts with 2.444 billion shares traded. These transactions, valued at N72.029 billion, represented approximately 66.14% of the total equity turnover volume for the week. Following the financial sector, the Oil and Gas Industry maintained a strong secondary position with N39.510 billion in trade value, while the Services Industry rounded out the top three. According to market analysts, the heavy concentration of capital in banking and insurance stocks suggests that institutional investors are prioritizing liquidity and dividend stability in the current economic climate.
