The Nigeria Customs Service Ports and Terminal Multipurpose Service Command has reported a substantial increase in fiscal collections, netting N76,172,843,401.24 between January and February 2026. This performance represents a dramatic rise from the N43.39 billion generated during the same period in the previous year, highlighting a more aggressive approach to revenue recovery and trade monitoring. According to Chief Superintendent of Customs Abubakar A. Tsafe, the Command achieved N45.51 billion in January alone, followed by a robust N30.65 billion in February. These figures suggest that the strategic reforms implemented by the leadership are successfully funneling necessary capital into the federal coffers.

Technological Integration Through Modernized Management Systems

Central to this operational success is the adoption of the Unified Customs Management System, locally referred to as B’ Odogwu. Comptroller Joe Anani noted that this technological platform has become the heartbeat of customs modernization, providing the digital infrastructure necessary to streamline cargo clearance and monitor trade flows with greater precision. While the system required initial sacrifices from terminal operators and freight forwarders, its current stability is cited as a primary factor in the Command’s increased productivity. The impending arrival of new scanning equipment is expected to further automate these processes, reducing the reliance on manual inspections and decreasing the time required for legitimate goods to enter the market.

Rigorous Enforcement Against Illegal Arms Proliferation

Beyond fiscal metrics, the Command has intensified its role as a frontline guardian against national security threats. This shift was evidenced by the recent handover of various arms and ammunition to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons. The seized inventory included five pistols, a Crossman pump master rifle, and hundreds of live cartridges and empty shells uncovered during the examination of imported vehicles. Comptroller Anani emphasized that these interceptions reflect a persistent anti-smuggling resolve, ensuring that prohibited items are neutralized before they can enter the domestic landscape.
