Formalizing High Level Customs Cooperation
The Nigeria Customs Service has reached a landmark agreement with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to deepen institutional collaboration and modernize border frameworks. This partnership was solidified during an official visit by Comptroller General Bashir Adeniyi to his Malaysian counterpart, Dato’ Haji Amran bin Haji Ahmad. Held on the sidelines of the 2026 Defence Services Asia Exhibition, the discussions focused on creating a more efficient and transparent environment for the expanding trade volume between the two nations.
Addressing the Surge in Bilateral Trade
The urgency of this cooperation is underscored by a dramatic increase in trade activities over the last five years. According to NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada, Nigerian imports from Malaysia surged from N159.9 billion in 2020 to N716.0 billion in 2024, with total cumulative trade reaching approximately N1.82 trillion. This trajectory has necessitated a shift from informal relations to a structured, customs to customs partnership that can handle the complexities of high volume industrial and agricultural exchange.
Establishing a Mutual Recognition Framework
A significant outcome of the meeting was the acknowledgment of a missing legal framework to guide bilateral customs activities. To resolve this, both administrations have agreed to initiate the process of establishing a Mutual Recognition Agreement. This initiative, to be pursued through the World Customs Organisation and diplomatic channels, aims to provide a structured basis for cooperation. It is expected to build mutual trust while supporting reciprocal measures that simplify the movement of goods across borders.
