Resolution of the Remote Summon Inquiry

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officially closed its investigation into approximately 2.6 million Tesla vehicles on Monday. The probe centered on the "Actually Smart Summon" feature, a system that allows owners to maneuver their vehicles over short distances using a smartphone application. While the agency initially raised concerns following reports of nearly 100 crashes, the final analysis determined that these incidents were exclusively low-speed events occurring on private property or in parking areas. Crucially, the regulator found no evidence of major collisions, airbag deployments, or injuries related to the technology's use.

Technical Refinements and Obstacle Detection

Tesla successfully mitigated regulatory concerns through a series of over-the-air software updates designed to sharpen the vehicle's situational awareness. According to the NHTSA, these updates specifically targeted improvements in detecting dynamic objects, such as closing gates, and identifying camera blockages caused by environmental factors like snow or condensation. Most of the documented incidents involved minor contact with parked cars or garage doors, often occurring at the start of a session when visibility was compromised. The regulator noted that the low frequency and minimal severity of these property-damage reports did not justify further enforcement action at this time.

Persistent Scrutiny of Full Self-Driving Systems

Despite the closure of the Summon probe, Tesla’s more advanced driver-assistance technologies remain under intense federal oversight. Last month, the NHTSA upgraded its investigation into Tesla’s "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) software to an "engineering analysis," a formal stage that typically precedes a potential recall. This expanded review now covers approximately 3.2 million vehicles. Federal investigators are particularly focused on whether the FSD system provides adequate warnings to drivers and how the technology performs in real-world conditions where visibility may be limited or traffic laws are complex.
