A Shift from the Browser to the Desktop

In a significant departure from its web-first philosophy, Google has launched official desktop applications for both Windows and macOS. While the company has historically directed users toward Chrome for its search and AI products, these new native apps are designed to integrate directly into the operating system’s core. By moving onto the desktop, Google aims to provide faster, more contextual access to its AI services, directly competing with native tools like Microsoft’s Copilot and Apple’s integrated Siri features.

Windows Search App: Alt + Space Integration

The "Google app for desktop" has officially exited its beta phase on Windows 10 and 11. Accessible via a system-wide Alt + Space shortcut, the app features a floating, compact search interface that overlays any active window. Beyond standard web queries, the app can be authorized to search local files and applications. It also includes a "Lens" button, allowing users to highlight segments of their screen to instantly run visual searches or provide screen-sharing context for AI-driven inquiries.

Native Gemini for Mac: Powered by Antigravity

For macOS, Google has bypassed a general search app in favor of a native Gemini AI application. Developed in under 100 days using Google’s "Antigravity" framework and coded in Swift, the app is triggered by an Option + Space command. This native tool provides full access to Gemini’s web features, including document uploads, "Notebooks," and advanced tools like Deep Research and Canvas. It is specifically optimized for Mac, allowing the AI to "read" active windows for better context during brainstorming or research sessions.
