A Strategic Shift in Talent Retention In a move designed to bolster the national workforce, New Zealand is set to introduce a new visa category specifically for international graduates. Announced by Immigration New Zealand, the "Short Term Graduate Work Visa" represents a strategic effort to bridge the gap between academic completion and professional employment. By offering a dedicated window for job seeking, the government hopes to retain a higher percentage of locally trained international talent within the domestic economy.

The Short Term Graduate Work Visa Framework The newly established visa provides eligible graduates with up to six months of open work rights. Starting late this year, students who complete a full-time graduate diploma at NZQCF Level 7 will become eligible for this visa, provided they already hold a bachelor's degree—whether obtained in New Zealand or internationally. The duration of these visas will be granted for up to one year, scaled according to the length of time the student spent studying for their diploma within New Zealand.
