A Transatlantic Solution to Rural Staffing Shortages
The invitation comes in response to a BBC report revealing that the Welsh Ambulance Service will not offer roles to its 2026 graduating class due to a combination of operational and financial constraints. Students in Wales have reportedly been advised by their own institutions to seek employment in New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. Dan Ohs, Deputy Chief Executive for Ambulance Operations at Hato Hone St John, confirmed that the organization is open to discussions with these graduates, despite a general preference for local or Australian candidates.
Currently, the primary pressure on the New Zealand ambulance sector is located in rural communities, where roughly 50 paramedic roles remain unfilled. These "frontline" vacancies are critical for maintaining emergency response times in isolated areas, making the prospect of international recruitment a strategic necessity for the service as it looks to bolster its workforce.
Recruitment Hierarchies and Integration Support
Despite the openness to Welsh applicants, St John leadership maintains a clear hierarchy in its hiring strategy. Ohs noted that graduates from New Zealand and Australia are generally preferred because UK graduates often require more intensive transitional support to adapt to the specific operational environment of the Southern Hemisphere.
"For those who haven't worked in the emergency ambulance sector before, our preference is to employ firstly from New Zealand, second from Australia," Ohs explained. He further specified that when looking specifically toward the United Kingdom, the organization prioritizes "experienced paramedics and Kiwis who are returning." This conservative approach ensures that new recruits in high-pressure rural roles have the necessary clinical autonomy to function with minimal immediate supervision.
