A Milestone for Namibian Regenerative Tourism
The Namibian tourism industry achieved international acclaim this week as two local organizations secured top honors at the WTM Africa Responsible Tourism Awards 2026. Held in Cape Town, South Africa, the ceremony highlighted organizations that demonstrate a profound commitment to protecting nature and honoring heritage. SANParks board member Rachel Nxele emphasized that these awards are a recognition of real impact and long-term commitment to building dignity within the tourism sector, placing Namibia at the forefront of the continent’s sustainable travel movement.
Gold Award for Desert-Based Economic Innovation
RuralRevive Namibia was the recipient of a gold award in the regenerative tourism category for its "Building a Desert-Based Economy" initiative. Conceptualized and managed by the Wolwedans Foundation, the project was lauded by judges for addressing systemic structural challenges in the Maltahöhe region. The initiative focuses on rebuilding local food systems and restoring dignity through employment, effectively transforming the local tourism economy into a resilient, desert-based ecosystem that prioritizes climate-appropriate horticulture.
Systems Linking Tourism to Community Livelihoods
According to Nxele, the success of RuralRevive lies in its ability to reconnect the tourism industry with community livelihoods. By fostering local enterprise development and creating sustainable systems, the project has established a model for how tourism can benefit local populations beyond traditional service roles. This regenerative approach ensures that the environment and the community are not merely sustained, but actively improved through the presence of the tourism sector.
