A Decisive Mandate for Regional Stability
The Muslim World League (MWL) has issued a high level endorsement of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which passed with a significant majority of 13 votes in favor. The resolution, which was co-sponsored by a historic coalition of 135 member states, specifically targets the "egregious attacks" launched by Iran against its neighbors since the conflict began on February 28. In a statement from the General Secretariat in Mecca, the MWL lauded the Council’s resolute stance, interpreting the broad international support as an unequivocal message that the targeting of sovereign nations and the deliberate destabilization of the Middle East will not be tolerated by the global community.
Rejecting the Language of Provocation
Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, the Secretary-General of the MWL and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars, stated that Iran’s current military campaign is based on "flimsy justifications" intended to spread chaos throughout the region. The League warned that these actions, which include the use of regional proxies and the obstruction of maritime trade, pose a grave threat to international peace and security. By endorsing the resolution, the MWL is aligning itself with a diplomatic front that demands an immediate and unconditional halt to all threats and provocations, emphasizing that religious and political leadership in the Muslim world rejects the expansion of the war into peaceful neighboring territories.
Protection of Civilian and Residential Areas
A primary focus of the MWL’s welcome was the resolution’s specific condemnation of strikes targeting residential areas and civilian objects. The organization highlighted that the conflict has moved beyond military engagements to a phase of infrastructure warfare that directly impacts innocent populations. The MWL expressed full solidarity with the citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan—all of whom have faced unprovoked aerial assaults. This humanitarian concern reflects the growing alarm within the Islamic world over the disregard for international law and the sanctity of civilian life in the pursuit of strategic dominance.
