The Source of the Outbreak
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local health departments traced the contamination to specific harvest areas in the Pacific Northwest and portions of the Gulf Coast. The recall affects oysters distributed to wholesalers, restaurants, and retail stores between late January and mid-February 2026. Authorities believe that recent heavy rainfall and sewage runoff may have introduced the virus into the coastal waters where the shellfish were being cultivated.
Identifying Affected Products
Consumers are advised to look for specific tags or labels on oyster containers. Most commercially sold shellfish are required to have a "shellfish tag" that lists the harvest date and location.
Harvest Areas: Specific zones in BC (British Columbia), Washington State, and Louisiana.
Distribution: Affected products were shipped to CA, WA, OR, NY, FL, and several other states.
