Coordinated Raid Targets Bangkok Counterfeit Hub
Thai law enforcement officials have successfully neutralized a sophisticated criminal network dedicated to the mass production of counterfeit monosodium glutamate (MSG) and seasoning powders. On April 17, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed the culmination of an operation that resulted in the seizure of nearly 2 million baht in illicit goods. The crackdown centered on a hidden production facility located in the Bang Khun Thian district of Bangkok, which served as the primary hub for an interprovincial distribution ring. This enforcement action followed months of surveillance and tracing efforts aimed at identifying the source of substandard food products appearing in local markets.
Tracking the Distribution Route From Chaiyaphum
The investigation was initially triggered by the arrest of several small-scale traders in Chaiyaphum province, which provided the first clues regarding a larger supply chain. Police Lieutenant-Colonel Wiwattanachai Kluenkaew noted that officers spent more than three months meticulously tracing the distribution routes back to the capital. The breakthrough occurred when investigators identified a suspicious box truck leaving a side street in the Samae Dam subdistrict. This vehicle was followed to a petrol station in Pathum Thani province, where a search by the Economic Crime Suppression Division uncovered a massive haul of counterfeit products, leading to the immediate arrest of the driver.
Sanitary Violations and Brand Forgery Revealed
Upon securing search warrants for three critical locations, officers raided a residence in Soi Sakae Ngam 50 where they discovered four individuals actively engaged in the manufacturing process. The facility was allegedly producing fake seasonings that imitated globally recognized brands, such as Ajinomoto and Ros Dee. Authorities reported that these items were being manufactured using substandard raw materials within highly unhygienic conditions, posing a significant health risk to the public. During interrogation, a suspect identified as Kriangkrai reportedly admitted to operating the counterfeit business for over two years, fulfilling orders that reached a capacity of 1,500 packets per day.
