A Strategic Infrastructure Overhaul
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the transport network in the South East with a major financial and technical review of the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway. Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced during an inauguration of completed sections that the total cost for the reconstruction project is now estimated at N350 billion. This represents a significant upward revision from the original N202 billion contract, a move the minister attributed to the adoption of higher durability standards and expanded project scopes under the current administration.
Transition To Reinforced Concrete Pavement
A central feature of the ongoing work is the shift from traditional asphalt to reinforced concrete technology. Minister Umahi revealed that a 72-kilometer stretch of the road is being reconstructed using this high-standard material at a cost of approximately N150 billion. The decision is based on the superior longevity of concrete, which can last between 50 and 100 years with minimal maintenance, compared to the frequent failures observed in asphalt roads. This standard is identical to the one currently being utilized on the prestigious Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.
Progress Report And Easter Traffic Relief
Work on the concrete sections is proceeding rapidly, with the first 15-kilometer segment reported to be 97% complete. In a move to facilitate easier movement for travelers during the 2026 Easter break, this section is currently being opened to motorists. Additionally, an 18-kilometer stretch is pushing toward Anambra State, while a separate 39-kilometer segment starting from the River Niger Bridge axis remains under active construction. The minister has directed all contractors handling the remaining asphalt portions to pivot to the concrete standard to maintain uniformity and quality.
