A Massive Strategic Investment In South East Infrastructure
The Federal Government has significantly scaled up its commitment to the Enugu–Onitsha federal highway, a critical economic artery in South East Nigeria. During an inspection and inauguration of completed sections, the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, revealed that the total project cost has been revised to 350 billion naira. This update follows a comprehensive review of the original 202 billion naira contract, reflecting the administration's resolve to deliver high-quality, long-lasting infrastructure that can withstand the region's heavy traffic and environmental demands.
Adopting Global Concrete Standards
A pivotal change in the project's execution is the transition from traditional asphalt to reinforced concrete pavement. Minister Umahi detailed that a 72-kilometer stretch has been specifically carved out for this technology at a cost of approximately 150 billion naira. According to the Minister, concrete roads offer a vastly superior lifespan—ranging between 50 and 100 years—with significantly lower maintenance requirements compared to asphalt, which is prone to frequent failure. This engineering shift aligns the Enugu–Onitsha project with the high durability standards currently being applied to the Lagos–Calabar coastal highway.
Progress Report And Holiday Traffic Relief
The Minister provided an optimistic update on construction milestones, noting that the first 15-kilometer segment of the reinforced concrete section is currently 97% complete. To facilitate smoother travel during the 2026 Easter celebrations, this portion is being opened to motorists immediately. Meanwhile, work is ongoing on an 18-kilometer stretch toward Anambra and a separate 39-kilometer segment extending from the River Niger Bridge axis. To maintain uniform quality, contractors previously handling asphalt sections have been instructed to adopt the concrete standard for the remaining 23 kilometers of the highway.
