Erratic Highway Solicitations Trigger Emergency Response

The Sunday morning commute in Dodge County took a dangerous turn when multiple motorists reported a driver acting with extreme unpredictability on U.S. Highway 151. According to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, the initial caller described a vehicle driving erratically before coming to a complete stop in the middle of the highway. The driver, later identified as William McCann, allegedly exited his vehicle to approach the caller and demand cash, an act that forced the motorist to flee the scene and contact emergency dispatchers immediately.

Beaver Dam Law Enforcement Initiates Traffic Stop

As deputies began their investigation into the highway disturbance, a second report of similar behavior within the city limits of Beaver Dam confirmed the ongoing threat to public safety. Local police officers successfully located McCann’s vehicle and initiated what was intended to be a standard traffic stop. Upon making contact, officers observed signs that the driver was operating under the influence of an intoxicant, but as they ordered McCann to exit the car, he reportedly accelerated away, initiating a high speed chase through urban and rural corridors.

State Patrol Intervention and the PIT Maneuver

The pursuit escalated quickly as McCann fled toward the City of Juneau, prompting intervention from the Wisconsin State Patrol. In an effort to terminate the dangerous chase, a state trooper executed a Pursuit Immobilization Technique, commonly known as a PIT maneuver, intended to spin the suspect vehicle and stall its engine. While the maneuver resulted in a collision, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office noted that McCann managed to regain control of his vehicle and continued his flight from law enforcement, bypassing the initial attempt at a forced stop.
