Miami Police Chief Manny Morales reported that officers were originally flagged down by an individual at a hotel located on Northeast Second Avenue and Second Street to intervene in an active argument. The situation rapidly deteriorated when the suspect reportedly redirected his aggression toward the responding officers. The timing of the event, occurring as thousands of tourists arrived for the weekend festivities, prompted an immediate and massive law enforcement response to secure the urban core.

Failure of Non Lethal Intervention Methods

According to statements from Chief Morales, the responding officers attempted to subdue the suspect using multiple levels of non lethal force before resorting to their firearms. Following the shooting, the male suspect was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.
