Narcotics Investigation Escalates Near East Lohman Avenue

The fatal encounter began at approximately 2:00 PM on Friday when agents with the Metro Narcotics unit were performing surveillance on a specific individual. According to preliminary reports from the Las Cruces Police Department, the situation turned violent as agents attempted to initiate contact with the suspect near the 2300 block of East Lohman Avenue. Gunfire was exchanged during the confrontation, resulting in immediate fatalities at the scene.

Identification of Suspect and Recovery of Evidence

Authorities have officially identified the deceased as 45 year old David Gallegos Jr. Investigators confirmed that Gallegos Jr. was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting occurred. Following the incident, forensic teams recovered a firearm that was in the possession of the suspect. No law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the exchange, and the immediate area was cordoned off for several hours to facilitate the gathering of ballistic evidence and witness statements.

Multidisciplinary Task Force Leads Investigation

In accordance with standard protocol for lethal force incidents, the Officer Involved Incident Task Force has assumed control of the investigation.
