Officer Attempted De-escalation Before Opening Fire
Details have emerged regarding a critical officer-involved shooting that occurred on March 12 near St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. According to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, Officer Taylor McDonagh was responding to reports of a person sleeping on the sidewalk when she encountered 46-year-old Eric Keith Brown. Footage and witness accounts describe a harrowing sequence where McDonagh repeatedly backed away from Brown, pleading with him to stop his advance. At one point, she was heard telling him, “Don’t make me do this,” as he allegedly pursued her aggressively.
Failed Non-Lethal Interventions and Suspect’s Statements
During the confrontation, Brown reportedly ignored commands to stay back and expressed a desire to die, shouting "Tase me" and "I ain't afraid of dying." Officer McDonagh deployed her Taser twice in an attempt to stop his advance, but the device failed to incapacitate him. Despite being unarmed, Brown continued to run toward the officer with his arms waving, yelling “Shoot me” multiple times. The Sheriff’s Office noted that McDonagh continued to retreat to create distance before eventually firing two rounds, one of which struck Brown in the upper torso.
Suspect Hospitalized and Facing Felony Charges
While Brown suffered life-threatening wounds, officials confirmed Tuesday that he is expected to survive. He has been formally arrested and cited with a felony charge of resisting arrest through threats or violence. Brown was known to local community volunteers as a frequent guest at a nearby church breakfast program, though he had recently been flagged for behavioral issues and "becoming a threat to himself." He had only just been readmitted to the program a week prior to the shooting after promising to improve his conduct.
