Tragedy at the Intersection of 14th Street

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are currently processing the details of a fatal traffic collision in the 5400 block of Colorado Avenue, Northwest. On the evening of Sunday, March 1, 2026, at approximately 9:57 p.m., Fourth District officers arrived at the scene to find a man and a juvenile male suffering from severe injuries. The collision involved a gold 2005 Mercedes-Benz and an electric stand-on Segway scooter, a confrontation that resulted in one immediate fatality and a second victim left in critical condition.

Preliminary Findings on Traffic Violations

The initial investigation by traffic detectives revealed a series of signal violations by both parties involved in the crash. The Mercedes-Benz was traveling northbound on 14th Street when it reportedly drove through a red light at the intersection with Colorado Avenue and initiated a left turn. Simultaneously, the Segway scooter, traveling southbound, also entered the intersection against a red signal. This dual failure to adhere to traffic signals led to the car striking the scooter with enough force to eject both riders onto the roadway.

Post-Collision Flight and Suspect Search

Following the impact, the driver of the gold Mercedes-Benz continued for a short distance along Colorado Avenue before coming to a stop. Rather than rendering aid or waiting for emergency responders, both the driver and a passenger exited the vehicle and fled the area on foot. This abandonment of the vehicle and the victims has shifted the investigation toward a criminal hit-and-run probe, as police work to identify the individuals associated with the 2005 sedan.
