Legal Proceedings Begin for Fatal 2024 Cruiser Collision
Sgt. Scott Quigley is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday afternoon at Middlesex County Superior Court following his indictment for motor vehicle homicide. The charges stem from a December 2024 incident in which Quigley allegedly operated his unmarked cruiser with a blood alcohol concentration of .11, exceeding the .08 legal limit. The resulting collision with a wheelchair transport van led to the death of occupant Angelo Schettino, who succumbed to his injuries one month after the crash. Quigley, previously a homicide investigator, had remained on injury pay for eight months following the incident before being suspended when the allegations surfaced during an unrelated murder trial.
Scrutiny Over Handling of Initial Crash Investigation
The circumstances surrounding the initial reporting of Quigley’s crash have prompted multiple independent reviews. Information regarding the sergeant's alleged intoxication only emerged during a wrongful death lawsuit, leading the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office to refer the criminal matter to Suffolk County prosecutors. While an internal report cleared the Middlesex office of wrongdoing, it revealed that at least one employee had been informed of the allegations a year prior to their public disclosure. The State Police continue to conduct internal affairs investigations into several officers involved in the initial response, including Lt. Anthony DeLucia, who has been suspended with pay.
Academy Supervisor Faces Perjury and Manslaughter Charges
Lt. Jennifer Penton, who initially investigated Quigley's collision, will appear in court the same day as Quigley to face a perjury charge in a separate matter. Penton was previously arraigned this month on a manslaughter charge related to the September 2024 death of state police trainee Enrique Delgado-Garcia. As the supervisor of the academy's Defensive Tactics Unit, Penton is accused of negligence regarding a boxing match that left Delgado-Garcia with fatal injuries. The perjury charge specifically alleges that Penton provided false testimony to a grand jury concerning her knowledge of the recruit’s concussion symptoms prior to his death.
