A "Personal" Theme: Costume Art

The theme for the 2026 Met Gala, "Costume Art," focuses on the "indivisisible connection between our bodies and the clothes we wear." Sánchez Bezos revealed that the theme is deeply personal to her, noting her fascination with the intersection of history and style. During her Today appearance, she drew a parallel between surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and designer Elsa Schiaparelli, explaining, "Dalí’s medium was a canvas, and hers was clothing." This year’s exhibition will pair roughly 200 historical garments with 200 artworks from the Met’s permanent collection, marking the first time fashion has been given such a central, transformative position within the museum's galleries.

Leading the Charge as "Major Donors"

While the Met Gala has historically been funded by major fashion houses (such as Louis Vuitton or Chanel), the 2026 edition marks a significant shift toward private billionaire sponsorship. The Metropolitan Museum of Art confirmed in late 2025 that the exhibition is "made possible by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos." Their contribution, estimated to be in the high seven-figure range, cements their status as the new "power couple" of the fashion world. This move follows their high-profile wedding in Venice in late 2025 and their debut at the 2024 Gala, where Sánchez Bezos famously wore a custom, glass-adorned Oscar de la Renta gown.

Balancing Author Duties with Gala Planning

Sánchez Bezos is managing her Met Gala responsibilities alongside the launch of her second children’s book, The Fly Who Flew Under the Sea, which debuted on March 3, 2026. She noted that the "wonder" she explores in her writing—inspired by her own journey with dyslexia—carries over into her appreciation for the artistry of fashion. "When Anna called me... I was so honored," she said. "It’s going to be incredible to see what everyone wears and to be able to honor all of these designers as the true artists they are."
