Rapid Response to Evening Vehicle Theft Report

The Laredo Police Department initiated an emergency citywide lookout Friday evening following a report of a stolen pickup truck in the 3100 block of South Jarvis. At approximately 6:20 p.m., the vehicle's owner alerted authorities to the disappearance of the truck, prompting patrol units to flood the surrounding sectors. The strategic distribution of officers paid off roughly 20 minutes later when the vehicle was successfully spotted by a patrol unit near the intersection of South Ejido and Pita Mangana, setting the stage for a mobile confrontation.

Short Duration Pursuit Ends in Property Damage

When officers attempted to conduct a high-risk traffic stop, the driver of the stolen truck chose to evade rather than comply with the flashing lights and sirens. The resulting pursuit lasted less than two minutes but covered several city blocks as the suspect attempted to navigate through Laredo traffic. The chase came to an abrupt and destructive end when the driver lost control of the pickup, veering off the roadway and slamming into a fence located in the 3100 block of Colombia Drive, causing significant damage to the private property.

Foot Pursuit and Final Apprehension

Following the impact with the fence, the suspect, later identified as Jerry Hughes Overby, abandoned the disabled vehicle and attempted to evade capture on foot. Witnesses and responding officers tracked his movements as he moved through the residential neighborhood in a desperate bid for freedom. Law enforcement established a perimeter and successfully located the 38-year-old in the 2800 block of Palo Blanco. He was taken into custody without further incident, ending a series of crimes that had spanned less than an hour from the initial theft report.
