Reintroduction of Movement Restrictions
In a significant policy shift, the Lagos State Government has directed residents across all five divisions of the state to observe a stay-at-home order this Saturday. The mandatory environmental sanitation exercise will take place between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the restriction is necessary to allow for a concentrated effort in cleaning surroundings and clearing drainage channels without the interference of vehicular traffic.
Strategic Waste Management and Deployment
To manage the expected surge in refuse, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has strategically positioned evacuation and compactor trucks throughout the state. The government aims to ensure that solid waste and debris cleared from gutters and frontages are removed promptly to avoid secondary blockages. Major transport unions have officially pledged their support, confirming that no vehicles will operate from parks or terminals during the designated two-hour window.
High-Level Monitoring and Enforcement
The exercise will see active participation from top state officials to ensure maximum compliance. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, wife of the Lagos State Governor, alongside members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), will lead one monitoring team, while the Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, will oversee operations in another local government area. Environmental health and enforcement officers have been authorized to issue abatement notices to non-compliant households, with the threat of prosecution under the Lagos State Environmental Management Law of 2017.
