Historical Roots and the 2026 Rock Fundación
The founding of La Paz dates back to May 3, 1535, when Hernán Cortés established the first, albeit short lived, Spanish settlement on the peninsula. This year’s 491st anniversary features a departure from traditional programming, with the city hosting "Rock Fundación" in Parque Revolución on May 16-17. The event will offer free concerts to the public, featuring prominent Mexican rock bands including Jumbo, DLD, Resorte, and Allison, signaling a shift toward modern cultural engagement alongside historical remembrance.
Traditionally, the Fiestas de Fundación include a reenactment of the Spanish arrival and the crowning of a "Reina Calafia," a figure inspired by the myth of Queen Calafia. These celebrations, which took their modern form in the mid 1940s, serve as a vital link to the peninsula's colonial and indigenous history. The Guaycura people, the original inhabitants of the region, play a central role in the historical narratives revisited during these annual May festivities.
Persistent Conflict Over Informal Commerce in Cabo
In Cabo San Lucas, the popular Playa El Médano has become a primary battleground for municipal control over informal commerce. Despite a major sweep in August 2025 that removed over 300 unauthorized vendors, the situation has regressed into what the Los Cabos Coordinating Council (CCC) describes as "chaos and anarchy." Private sector leaders are now calling for the hire of additional enforcement officials to support the 15 currently tasked with monitoring the beach.
The conflict stems from the return of hundreds of illegal traders who lack the official uniforms and identification required of the 698 authorized vendors. The Los Cabos Hotel Association has reported a rise in tourist complaints regarding aggressive sales tactics. Furthermore, business leaders have expressed concern that the lack of institutional control is fostering a climate of insecurity and may be linked to illicit activities, threatening the luxury destination’s global reputation.
