Protests Erupt Over "Worsening Security Crisis"

Fear and frustration boiled over into the streets of Kwara South on Friday as hundreds of residents mobilized to demand immediate government action against a wave of violent crime. Organized by the Kwara South Development Forum, the protesters alleged that armed groups are now operating with near-impunity, carrying out coordinated attacks that have systematically weakened local defenses and overwhelmed traditional security structures.

Schools Shut and Communities Deserted

The human toll of the insecurity was a focal point of the demonstration. Convener Obashola Ayomide Ridwan highlighted the collapse of social infrastructure, noting that schools across the region have been forced to close to protect students from abduction. "Our mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers have been killed and kidnapped," Ridwan stated, emphasizing that the mobilization was a last resort to draw national attention to a region he described as "deteriorating."

Eyewitness Accounts of Displacement and Ransom

Protesters shared harrowing accounts of life in the affected Local Government Areas (LGAs). Adebisi Jimoh, a resident of Babanla, reported that his community and surrounding settlements have become "deserted" as families flee persistent assaults. Sodiq Amidu, another protester, detailed the financial devastation hitting the region, alleging that victims are only released after the payment of exorbitant ransoms—payments that many families simply cannot afford. Those who cannot pay, he warned, often never return.
