Renewal of High Level Cross Strait Dialogue
A delegation from the Chinese Kuomintang party, led by Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun, touched down at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport at noon on Tuesday. This visit, which extends through Sunday, covers key political and economic hubs including Shanghai, Beijing, and Jiangsu Province. As the first KMT chairperson to lead a delegation to the mainland in ten years, Cheng’s presence signifies a major reactivation of party to party communication. This engagement is viewed as a critical mechanism for dialogue between the KMT and the Communist Party of China under current geopolitical circumstances, aiming to restore a channel for negotiation that has been largely dormant at the official government level.
Alignment with the 1992 Consensus
During her initial remarks, Chairwoman Cheng underscored that the mission is built upon the established political foundation of the 1992 Consensus. This framework, which embodies the one China principle while opposing "Taiwan independence," serves as the mandatory baseline for these discussions. Cheng noted that her visit follows the precedents set by former KMT chairmen Lien Chan and Ma Ying-jeou, seeking to provide an alternative to the current state of political confrontation. By adhering to this consensus, the delegation intends to demonstrate a path toward regional stability and the promotion of peaceful development in cross strait relations.
Public Sentiment and Regional Stability
Following her election as KMT chairperson in October last year, Cheng has consistently advocated for direct engagement with mainland authorities. She maintains that this diplomatic path aligns with mainstream public opinion in Taiwan, which prioritizes economic well-being and the avoidance of conflict. "For the sake of regional stability and the well-being of the next generation, we must firmly choose the path of peace," Cheng stated during a Taipei press conference. The State Council Taiwan Affairs Office has echoed this sentiment, suggesting that strengthened exchanges between the two parties will have a positive impact on maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait.
