End Of An Era For Kia’s Pioneer Electric Crossover
Kia announced a major shift in its electrification strategy Tuesday by confirming that the Niro EV will be phased out globally. As the automaker opened pre-orders for the refreshed Niro in Korea, it revealed that the vehicle will now be sold exclusively with a 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain. Kia President and CEO Jung Won-Jung noted during a media event that while the Niro was the brand’s first significant step toward an electric future, the market has evolved beyond adapted internal combustion platforms. Since its debut in 2016, the Niro family has sold over 1.2 million units, establishing itself as a foundational pillar of Kia's eco-friendly reputation.
Focus Shifts To Dedicated Electric Vehicle Platforms
The decision to kill off the Niro EV stems from Kia's desire to prioritize its "Opposites United" design language and the E-GMP dedicated electric architecture. Marketing executives explained that with the introduction of the EV3, EV4, and EV5, the company now possesses a range of vehicles with superior charging speeds, efficiency, and competitiveness compared to the aging Niro EV platform. By removing the fully electric variant of the Niro, Kia aims to streamline its production and guide consumers toward its more modern, purpose-built electric SUVs and sedans.
Pricing And Availability For Remaining Inventory
In its home market, the new hybrid-only Niro starts at approximately 28.85 million won, roughly 19,600 dollars. While the electric version is being discontinued, Kia plans to sell through its remaining 2026 Niro EV inventory in international markets, including the United States. In the U.S., the final iteration of the Niro EV is currently available in Wind and Wave trims with a starting price of 39,700 dollars. To facilitate the transition, Kia has introduced significant consumer incentives, including 0% APR financing and 10,000 dollars in customer cash for existing stock.
