A Confidential Resolution to the Civil Litigation

In a development that halts one of the last major legal hurdles for the Oscar-winning actor, Kevin Spacey has agreed to a settlement with a trio of accusers. The civil case, which was poised to bring a fresh round of scrutiny to Spacey’s tenure in London, has been indefinitely stayed following the agreement. Reports indicate that the settlement does not include a public admission of liability, consistent with Spacey’s long-standing strategy of denying all allegations of sexual misconduct. While the High Court in London was prepared to host the trial, the parties have opted for a private resolution, the figures of which have not been disclosed.

The Role of the Old Vic and Individual Accusers

Among those who reached a settlement is Ruari Cannon, a former associate of the Old Vic theater who waived his right to anonymity. Cannon’s allegations focused on an incident at a party during Spacey’s time as the artistic director of the prestigious institution. Notably, Cannon also reached a separate settlement with the Old Vic theater just two weeks ago regarding his claims. Cannon was a prominent figure in the 2024 documentary Spacey Unmasked, which explored various allegations against the actor. The two other men involved in the current settlement have remained anonymous throughout the proceedings.

A Retrospective on Spacey’s Criminal and Civil Successes

This settlement follows a major legal victory for Spacey in 2023, where a London jury cleared him of nine criminal charges, including sexual assault, relating to four men. Those alleged incidents spanned a period from 2001 to 2013. Two of the men from that criminal trial were among the individuals who subsequently pursued civil litigation in the High Court. Spacey’s legal team has consistently pointed to his 2023 acquittal and his previous victory in a U.S. civil case brought by actor Anthony Rapp where the jury found Spacey not liable as evidence of his innocence and the flawed nature of the accusations.
