Coordinated Infrastructure Upgrades Across the National Grid

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has scheduled a massive maintenance operation across seven key counties on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. According to the utility firm, the interruptions are a necessary component of ongoing efforts to stabilize the national grid and improve service delivery. The exercise will involve the replacement of faulty power lines, technical upgrades to existing substations, and the safe integration of new customers into the network. These periodic maintenance cycles are part of KPLC’s broader strategy to reduce the frequency of unplanned outages caused by aging infrastructure and equipment failure.

Nairobi and Kiambu: Key Economic Hubs Affected

Nairobi and Kiambu counties are among the primary regions slated for the Tuesday blackouts. In Nairobi, the Huruma area and sections of Juja Road will experience an eight-hour supply cutoff. In neighboring Kiambu County, a significantly larger footprint will be affected, encompassing Rironi, Kerwa, Ngecha, and several surrounding villages including Muguga and Zambezi. Businesses in these industrial and residential corridors are advised to seek alternative power solutions, such as generators or solar backups, to maintain operations throughout the workday.

Significant Disruptions for Nakuru and Rift Valley Regions

Nakuru County will see extensive maintenance work centered around the Maai Mahiu area. The shutdown will impact a wide range of facilities, including the Old Kijabe region, IDP camps, and various industrial sites such as the Dry Port (Old Line), China Wu-Yi, and Goldstone. Educational and commercial centers in Longonot and Ewaso Kedong Market are also on the list. Given the strategic importance of Maai Mahiu as a transit and industrial hub, KPLC has emphasized the need for pre-emptive planning by local stakeholders to mitigate the economic impact of the 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM window.
