The Battle for Julia Golden
The high-stakes moment occurred during the blind audition of 19-year-old Julia Golden from North Carolina, whose rendition of Deana Carter's "Strawberry Wine" earned chair turns from both Legend and Clarkson. As the two coaches began their pitch, Legend revealed he had "the Queen’s" blessing. In the video, McEntire addressed the camera directly, saying, "People have asked me, 'Can John Legend coach a country artist?' Heck yeah! ... I wish he'd coach me. He's absolutely fantastic... I’m the Queen of Country Music, and I endorse John Legend."
Clarkson’s Immediate Response: "She Better Answer"
Stunned by the endorsement, Clarkson immediately pulled out her phone on the coaching podium. "I need just a minute... She better answer," she quipped to the audience before actually calling McEntire during filming. To the delight of the crowd, McEntire answered, laughing as she told a panicked Clarkson to "calm down, girl." While Reba eventually acknowledged that Kelly is also an "excellent coach" for country artists, Clarkson didn't let her off the hook easily, jokingly telling her, "I love you so much, but I hate that video!"
Season 29: The "Battle of Champions" Era
This season, dubbed Battle of Champions, features a unique three-coach panel consisting entirely of past winners: Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine. With Reba McEntire having vacated her chair after Season 28, the competition to claim her "Country Queen" mantle has been fierce. Legend’s use of the endorsement was a strategic attempt to bridge the gap between his R&B roots and the country demographic, though the move ultimately backfired—Julia Golden chose to join Team Kelly anyway.
