Final Deliberations at Singh Durbar Headquarters
The judicial commission established to investigate the human and physical toll of the September 2025 Gen Z movement held its final internal meeting on Saturday. At their central office in Singh Durbar, commission members conducted a comprehensive review of their findings, which have been months in the making. An official from the panel confirmed that while the final draft is complete, the team spent Saturday cross-checking specific evidence and verifying testimonies to ensure the report’s integrity. The commission has formally requested an audience with the Prime Minister to hand over the document on Sunday, marking the end of one of the most significant judicial inquiries in Nepal's recent history.
The Fatal Legacy of the September Crackdown
The uprising, which erupted on September 8 and 9 of last year, resulted in the deadliest single episode of state violence in Nepal’s modern democratic era. At least 76 individuals, many of them unarmed students in school uniforms, were killed after security forces utilized live ammunition to suppress demonstrations against government corruption and a social media ban. The Karki commission was specifically mandated to identify the chain of command that led to the use of lethal force. This investigation followed the immediate collapse of the previous administration under KP Sharma Oli, who resigned as protesters breached government installations and surrounded the prime ministerial residence.
Probing Unprecedented Infrastructure and Property Damage
Beyond the human casualties, the commission’s report is expected to detail the catastrophic damage to national infrastructure. During the two days of unrest, several iconic and critical buildings were set ablaze, including sectors of the Singha Durbar complex, the federal parliament building, and the Supreme Court. The unrest also targeted private assets, most notably the Hotel Hilton and branches of the Bhatbhateni Supermarket, following public anger over perceived links between the business elite and the political establishment. The findings are anticipated to provide a fiscal and structural assessment of these losses, which are estimated to reach hundreds of billions of rupees.
