The September Unrest and Investigation Findings
The roots of the current legal action trace back to two days of intense civil unrest in September 2024, which ultimately resulted in the deaths of 76 people. An investigation commission recently concluded that Oli and his cabinet were negligent, specifically highlighting a failure to intervene during a period of sustained firing that claimed at least 19 lives on the first day of the demonstrations. The panel’s recommendation for prosecution became a central theme in the recent elections, fueling the landslide victory for Balendra Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party.
Detention Details and Health Concerns
Police spokesman Om Adhikari confirmed that both Oli and Lekhak are being held at the Kathmandu Police Office and are scheduled to appear in court on Sunday. K.P. Sharma Oli, 74, has a history of significant health issues, including two kidney transplants. Following his detention, witnesses reported that he was transferred from the police office to a hospital for medical observation. His legal team has characterized the arrest as "illegal and improper," arguing that there was no flight risk or threat of him avoiding future questioning.
Political Sea Change: The Rise of Balendra Shah
The arrest of the former prime minister serves as a definitive marker of the new administration's intent. Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s ascent represents a rejection of the traditional political establishment in Nepal. By acting swiftly on the commission’s recommendations, the Shah government is seeking to fulfill its primary campaign promise: accountability for the "Gen Z" generation that led the charge against systemic corruption and state-sponsored violence. The outcome of the upcoming court appearance will likely dictate the stability of the new government as it attempts to move past the trauma of the 2024 unrest.
