Redefining the Objectives of Operation Roaring Lion

Since the onset of the current conflict in February 2026, Israel’s official war aims have focused on the degradation of Iranian military infrastructure. However, Ambassador Yechiel Leiter’s recent comments suggest that Jerusalem views a tactical victory as insufficient. "The purpose is to make sure that we don’t have an entity in Tehran which is developing weapons of mass destruction... and is supporting proxies," Leiter told hosts Danielle Pletka and Marc Thiessen. While acknowledging that military strikes have crippled 70% of Iran's production capacity, Leiter argued that the threat persists as long as the current leadership remains in power. "If that can be done without regime change, okay. Probably can’t, though. So at the very least, what we want is regime collapse."

A Growing "Concerted Effort" with Gulf Allies

Perhaps the most striking revelation from the Ambassador was the deepening security coordination between Israel and its neighbors in the Gulf. Leiter claimed that nations including the UAE, Bahrain, and even Kuwait and Oman have moved into a closer orbit with Jerusalem during the last month of fighting. "They’ve asked us for assistance," Leiter stated, noting that the Iranian threat has catalyzed an alliance that goes beyond the initial scope of the Abraham Accords. This sentiment was echoed in a recent op-ed by Emirati envoy Yousef Otaiba, who argued that a "simple ceasefire" would fail to address the full spectrum of Iranian threats, from drones to sea lane blockades.

Beyond the U.S. "Mission Accomplished" Narrative

Leiter’s remarks appear to set a standard for victory that extends beyond the current American military involvement. He suggested that even if the United States decides its job is done after taking out production sites, Israel and its regional allies do not intend to "wrap up" until the threat is permanently neutralized. This "conclusive outcome" rhetoric signals that Israel is prepared for a long-term campaign of attrition or a shift toward supporting internal Iranian opposition to trigger the desired collapse.
