The "Litani Buffer" and Military Objectives
The Litani River, situated approximately 30 km (20 miles) north of the Israeli border, has become the new strategic frontline. Minister Katz stated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will "control the remaining bridges and the security zone" to push Hezbollah’s threat away from northern Israeli communities. Since March 13, the IDF has already destroyed five bridges crossing the river and accelerated the demolition of residential areas near the border, a strategy Katz explicitly compared to the military’s recent operations in the Gaza Strip.
Humanitarian Toll and Displacement
The push for a "forward defensive line" has resulted in a staggering humanitarian crisis. According to Lebanon’s health ministry:
Casualties: Over 1,000 people have been killed, including 120 children and 40 medical personnel.
Displacement: More than 1 million residents have been forced to flee their homes.
