Day Room Incident Leads to Fatal Outcome for Downtown Inmate

A 45 year old man in the custody of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office passed away Sunday morning following a medical episode within the downtown Central Jail. At approximately 4:20 a.m., several incarcerated individuals alerted deputies that the man had fainted in a facility day room. Responding officers found the man disoriented but still responsive to verbal commands. He was immediately moved to the jail's medical clinic for an urgent clinical evaluation before being transferred to a local hospital.

Emergency Lifesaving Measures Unsuccessful During Hospital Transport

The inmate’s condition took a critical turn during the ambulance transit. According to SDSO Lt. Juan Marquez, the man went into acute medical distress while en route, forcing paramedics to initiate emergency lifesaving protocols. Despite these intensive efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival at the hospital at 5:20 a.m. The man had been held at the facility since April 22, 2024, on charges related to the possession of an illegal weapon.

Systemic Scrutiny Follows Recurring In Custody Deaths

This latest fatality occurs amidst ongoing state and local scrutiny regarding the safety and medical standards within San Diego County’s jail system. A 2022 California State Auditor’s report previously highlighted "deficiencies" in the care provided by the Sheriff’s Office, noting that San Diego’s in custody death rate exceeded that of all other large California counties between 2006 and 2020. The department has since committed to a $500 million modernization plan, yet deaths have continued to occur, including the passing of 34 year old Grant Parker just one week prior on March 8.
