Medical Emergency in San Diego Central Jail Day Room

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office (SDSO) has launched an investigation into the death of a 45-year-old inmate who collapsed Sunday morning. According to official reports, deputies were called to a day room at the downtown facility at approximately 4:20 a.m. after other incarcerated individuals noticed the man had fainted. While initially responsive but disoriented, the inmate's condition rapidly deteriorated as he was being evaluated by jail medical staff and subsequently transferred to paramedics.

Life-Saving Measures and Pronouncement of Death

As paramedics transported the inmate to a local hospital, he entered severe medical distress, requiring immediate life-saving procedures. Despite these efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:20 a.m. The individual had been in sheriff's custody since April 2024 on charges related to the possession of an illegal weapon. His identity is currently being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin, and a family liaison officer has been assigned to assist his relatives.

Ongoing Scrutiny of San Diego In-Custody Deaths

This latest incident occurs against a backdrop of intense criticism regarding the safety and medical care within San Diego County jails. A 2022 California State Audit highlighted significant deficiencies in the sheriff’s office’s ability to protect incarcerated individuals, noting that San Diego's custody death rate exceeded that of all other large California counties between 2006 and 2020. The department reported 19 deaths in 2022 and six in 2023, with another hanging death reported just one week prior to this Sunday's incident.
