Coalition Demands Zoning Priority for South-East Candidates
In a significant escalation of regional political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 general elections, three influential Igbo groups and key stakeholders from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have officially vowed to oppose any South-East governor who hinders the zone's presidential aspirations. During a press briefing in Abuja, the coalition argued that the spirit of justice and fair play necessitates a zoning arrangement similar to the 1998 model, which paved the way for a South-West presidency. The groups maintain that since the return to democracy in 1999, the South-East remains the only major geopolitical zone yet to occupy the nation’s highest office.
Pressure Mounts on Tinubu to Forgo Re-election Bid
A primary tenet of the coalition’s current strategy is a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Dr. Godwin Udibe, National President of the South East Enlightenment Group, speaking on behalf of the collective, urged the incumbent president to shelve his 2027 re-election plans. The proposal suggests that supporting a South-Easterner for a single four-year term would complete a symbolic eight-year southern cycle, after which power could transition back to the North. This "equity framework" is being presented as a solution to long-standing grievances regarding the marginalization of the Igbo people in federal governance.
Warning Issued to "Defector" Governors and Ruling Party Allies
The coalition expressed particular concern regarding what they termed a "poaching game" by the All Progressives Congress (APC), which currently counts 31 governors among its ranks. Dr. Udibe noted that recent defections by South-East governors to the ruling party have not translated into improved socio-economic well-being for their constituents. The groups warned that these political shifts are being monitored and that they will actively mobilize the electorate to vote out any governor perceived to be working against the collective interest of a South-East presidency.
