The Reality Of Incumbency And Political Strategy

Honorable Leke Abejide, representing Yagba Federal Constituency, has publicly dismissed the possibility of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) securing the presidency in 2027. During an appearance on the current affairs program Politics Today, the lawmaker characterized President Bola Tinubu as a master of the political game whose influence has only strengthened since taking office. Abejide argued that if the President could secure victory while outside the corridors of power, defeating him now as an incumbent would be an exceptionally difficult task for any minor political entity.

Advocating For Pragmatic Strategic Alliances

The lawmaker proposed that the ADC should abandon independent presidential aspirations in favor of forming coalitions with more established political organizations. According to Abejide, the party should focus its limited energy and resources on winning seats within the National Assembly and various State Assemblies. He maintained that this collaborative approach would better position the party to exert national influence and remain a relevant factor in the country’s evolving political landscape.

Historical Warnings Against Resource Depletion

Reflecting on the internal dynamics of the 2023 electoral cycle, Abejide revealed that he had previously cautioned his party against fielding a presidential candidate. He noted that he had explicitly informed party leadership that such a move would be a waste of time and energy, as the capacity for a victory did not exist. By urging patience among his colleagues, he suggested that the current four year term is an insufficient window to mount a credible challenge against a deeply entrenched political veteran.
