Demanding Justice for Ife-North Indigenes
During a press conference held on Monday, a coalition of Ife-North indigenes from both Nigeria and the diaspora formally called for the zoning of the 2027 House of Representatives ticket to their local government council area. The group argued that the demand is not a mere plea but a necessity rooted in justice and equitable representation. Coalition Chairman Bolaji Olabode emphasized that Ife-North has waited long enough for actual representation and that the area's political relevance must extend beyond merely participating in elections.
Disparity in Economic Contribution and Political Reward
Stakeholders highlighted a significant gap between the local government’s contributions to the regional economy and its subsequent political rewards. Emmanuel Oderinola, a key member of the coalition, pointed out that while Ife-North provides significant electoral and economic support, development and opportunities remain minimal. The coalition noted that despite its population and size, the area has been sidelined from producing a member of the House of Representatives or securing major appointive positions since its establishment in 1989.
Mobilizing the Youth and Student Population
The movement has gained strong support from student and youth leaders who view the current political structure as a system of generational marginalization. Olalekan Johnson, a student representative, urged residents to convert their demographic numbers into political influence to secure their rightful place in the constituency. Youth leader Babalola Taiwo further noted that the issue is not a lack of capacity among indigenes but a deliberate design of exclusion that has affected an entire generation of potential leaders.
