A multi-agency search for a suspected child predator ended in gunfire and an arrest on Wednesday night. Autauga County Sheriff Mark Harrell confirmed that 28-year-old Taylor Cox was taken into custody on County Road 165 after law enforcement tracked him to a local residence. Cox had been the subject of an intensive search by Alabama authorities after warrants were issued for his arrest in the Huntsville area earlier this week.
The arrest turned violent as Autauga County deputies approached the home. According to Sheriff Harrell, Cox fired several shots at the responding officers from within the residence. Despite the immediate threat, no deputies were reported injured, and Cox reportedly surrendered "soon after" the initial exchange of gunfire. Sheriff Harrell praised his team for their professionalism, stating they did an "outstanding job taking a child predator off the streets."
Cox was originally wanted in Huntsville on two felony charges of possession of child pornography. Investigators allege he was found with multiple images and videos depicting child sexual exploitation. Following the issuance of those warrants, Cox reportedly fled North Alabama. Intelligence suggested he was hiding in or around the Selma area before he was ultimately located in Autauga County.
In addition to the original sex crime charges out of Huntsville, Cox now faces severe pending charges in Autauga County for the attempted murder of law enforcement officers. These new charges significantly heighten the legal peril for Cox, as attempted murder of a police officer carries a much steeper sentencing range under Alabama law.
Taylor Cox is currently being held at the Autauga County Jail. He is expected to face a bond hearing for the new local charges before potentially being extradited back to Madison County to address the child pornography allegations. The investigation remains active as authorities determine if anyone assisted Cox while he was a fugitive.
