Catastrophic Error in Laser Calibration

A recent ruling by the Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) has highlighted a severe failure in the beauty industry's safety protocols after a client was left with traumatic injuries. The investigation determined that a clinician mistakenly programmed a laser hair removal machine with settings intended for an entirely different skin type. This technical oversight resulted in a concentrated heat application that caused immediate and lasting burns to the woman's legs. The clinician involved had only three weeks of experience in laser hair removal at the time of the incident, having completed her beauty therapy qualification just six months prior.

Contested Safety Protocols and Patient Pain

During the hearing, conflicting accounts emerged regarding the implementation of mandatory safety checks. While the clinician claimed to have performed a test patch in accordance with clinic policy, the HDC found it more likely than not that this step was skipped, as the clinic’s records lacked any documentation of the procedure or its results. Furthermore, the patient testified that she repeatedly requested the treatment to stop due to the intensity of the pain, but the session continued. The HDC noted that the reported pain levels should have served as an immediate red flag for the practitioner to halt the procedure and reassess the equipment's intensity.

Post-Treatment Negligence and Misdiagnosis

The failure in care extended beyond the treatment room into the immediate aftercare phase. Upon concluding the session, the woman's legs exhibited significant swelling, which she questioned as potentially abnormal. The clinician dismissed these concerns, characterizing the reaction as standard inflammation of the hair follicles rather than injury. Independent medical advice sought by the HDC later confirmed that the appearance of the skin was inconsistent with follicle inflammation and was clearly indicative of severe burns. This lack of clinical awareness prevented the patient from seeking immediate medical intervention for her injuries until her partner contacted the clinic later that afternoon.
